WHAT IS A WELL-WOMAN EXAM AND WHY DO I NEED ONE?

As a modern woman, you have a lot on your plate and may not think it’s necessary to take time out for a health care appointment when you feel fit and healthy. However, your annual well-woman exam allows you to check in on your health and have screenings and tests to ensure you’re as healthy as you feel.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING A WELL-WOMAN EXAM?

While you might associate your well-woman visit with your Pap smear, the appointment is far more comprehensive — and you might not even need that test. In addition to your routine health screenings such as your blood pressure check and a blood panel, Ms. Li performs pelvic exams, breast exams, and Pap smears, when necessary. Depending on your age and risk factors, you may only need a Pap smear once every three to five years.

Additionally, your well-woman exam is an excellent opportunity to talk to your provider about any new symptoms you’ve experienced or changes in your overall health and well-being. Also, many health issues develop so slowly that you might not notice them.

HOW CAN A WELL-WOMAN EXAM HELP PROTECT MY HEALTH?

Ms. Li sees you once a year and keeps meticulous records about your health. This allows her to quickly see any changes in your health and order testing to identify the condition causing your symptoms.

In addition to monitoring your health, Ms. Li can provide:

  • Advice on contraception
  • Sexual health services, including STD and human papillomavirus (HPV) testing
  • Preconception health optimization
  • Menopause management
  • Mammogram referrals

Young women should start having well-woman visits between the ages of 13-15. While young women don’t need pelvic exams or Pap smears until they turn 21 or become sexually active, developing a relationship with a women’s health care provider can help young women learn about their bodies and what to expect as they move through puberty toward adulthood.
