WHAT IS PHYSICAL THERAPY?

Physical therapy is the practice of using supervised exercises and stretches to rebuild strength and flexibility after an injury or surgery. Physical therapists are trained and licensed medical professionals who can diagnose physical abnormalities and injuries as well as restore mobility and function.

WHEN DO I NEED PHYSICAL THERAPY?

Your doctor may recommend physical therapy when you’ve sustained an injury that limits your mobility or makes it difficult for you to complete everyday tasks. For example, physical therapy can help you recover from an ACL or rotator cuff injury that weakens your knee or shoulder, making it difficult to do simple household chores.

Physical therapy can provide pain relief and help you recover from surgery, improve your balance, and learn to use assistive devices like walkers or canes. Your doctor may also suggest physical therapy to try to heal an injury or degenerative condition without having to resort to surgery.

Additionally, the doctors at Beach Physicians Medical Group often prescribe physical therapy for their sports medicine patients who may benefit from additional training and exercises to reduce their risk of injury.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING PHYSICAL THERAPY?

Like other doctor’s appointments, your initial physical therapy session begins with a conversation. Your therapist asks about your symptoms, your lifestyle, and your goals. They perform a physical assessment to gauge your range of motion and identify physical abnormalities that may contribute to your pain and loss of strength and flexibility.

Your physical therapist creates a treatment plan to help you meet your goals. Your therapy sessions may include:

  • Guided exercises and stretches
  • Manual therapy like massage
  • Hot and cold therapies
  • Ultrasound or other treatments to relieve muscle spasm and pain

In addition to your physical therapy appointments, your therapist gives you exercises and stretches to practice at home in between your appointments. This “homework” helps you maintain your progress.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY?

Physical therapy is an effective, drug-free pain relief treatment. It’s also completely customized to address your specific needs, helping you recover quickly and safely from injury, illness, or surgery. It can also help you develop the strength and flexibility to reduce your risk of future injuries.
