WHAT CAUSES KNEE PAIN?

Knee pain is one of the most common conditions that the doctors at Beach Physicians Medical Group treat. Millions of Americans live with knee pain caused by both acute injuries, such as ACL tears and meniscus injuries, and chronic conditions like arthritis, tendonitis, and bursitis.

Arthritis is one of the most common causes of knee pain. Osteoarthritis, the most common form of the disease, develops as the cartilage that covers the ends of the bones that meet in your knee wears away and friction increases, leading to irritation and inflammation.

Tendonitis and bursitis are chronic overuse conditions where either your tendons or bursae, fluid-filled sacs that cushion and protect your joints, are inflamed. These are common injuries for athletes and people who have careers that require them to spend a lot of time on their feet.

HOW IS KNEE PAIN DIAGNOSED?

The doctors at Beach Physicians Medical Group diagnose knee pain with comprehensive physical exams. After asking about your symptoms and your lifestyle and hobbies, your doctor examines your knee, feeling for inflammation and other signs of physical abnormality in your joint. They ask you to walk around the office so they can observe your gait.

Your doctor may order diagnostic imaging tests like X-rays, ultrasounds, and MRIs to see the inside of your joint, and in some cases, they may suggest a knee arthroscopy.

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which your doctor makes small incisions around a joint and uses an arthroscope (a pencil-shaped surgical tool with a light and camera on its tip) to examine the inside of your joint without having to make a large incision. The arthroscope sends a video feed from inside your knee to a high-definition monitor in the treatment room.

HOW IS KNEE PAIN TREATED?

Your doctor creates a customized treatment plan to relieve your knee pain and heal your joint. Your program is tailored to meet your needs; however, they generally combine the RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) method with anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, and regenerative therapies like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections.

Don’t let knee pain disrupt your life — call or schedule an appointment today for expert diagnosis and treatment.
